Coach Ángel González Chávez passed away at 68, leaving a legacy in Mexican basketball. He led Halcones UV Xalapa to two LNBP championships. González Chávez had a cerebral hemorrhage in May this year while coaching Indios de la Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez in the Liga ABE tournament held in Xalapa. He remained hospitalized since then and his death was reported this weekend. In the Veracruz capital, the Chihuahuan coach made history by winning the first crown conquered by the Xalapa organization, marking a dynasty within Mexican basketball, dominating or being the protagonist of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional. González was nicknamed "Pompis" and had various stages and roles with Xalapa, involved as a coach or assistant, as well as sent to the sister organization Halcones UV Córdoba, where he also took them to the playoffs. In his last national title, he entered the scene, in the midst of the playoffs, by the Argentine Néstor García in 2010 to finally lift the national trophy, the last one that those Halcones would achieve. He arrived in Xalapa in 2003 when the Ciudad Juárez club moved to Veracruz to become Halcones UV, an organization that would mark an era in the then-emerging LNBP and win four national league titles. After his stint as a professional league coach, he returned to his native Chihuahua to take charge of the basketball project at the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez. Rest in peace, Ángel González Chávez!
